Air
Injection Reaction System
An emission control device designed to pump air to either the
exhaust manifold(s), catalytic converter(s), or atmosphere.
The purpose of this is to promote further oxidation of the exhaust,
namely the HC and CO emissions. A common misconception is that the
injected air just dilutes the exhaust. In fact, it oxidizes HC and
CO into H2O and CO2. Air injection systems include various types of
components that affect where and when air is injected into the
exhaust system. In many modern vehicles, the air injection system
operates only during warm-up.
The A.I.R.
(Air Injection Reaction) system injects air (O2) into the manifolds
when the car is first started to help burn up the raw HC's that the
engine is producing before it goes into closed loop. Once the car
goes into closed loop, the diverter valve switches the A.I.R. output
to the converter to aid in the burning of unused HC's down in the
converter itself. The system is also there to help warm up the O2
sensor during cold starts.
When engine
is cold "OPEN LOOP," the port solenoid is energized and air pump
pressure opens the passage to the exhaust ports.
During normal operation "CLOSED LOOP," the port solenoid is
de-energized, the converter solenoid is energized, and air pump
pressure opens the passage to the catalytic converter.
When the ECM determines that air divert is necessary, both solenoids
are de-energized and air pump output is diverted to the air cleaner
through a divert/relief valve. The divert/relief valve limits system
pressure.
Air is diverted to the atmosphere under the following conditions:
* Rich operation.
* When the ECM recognizes a problem and sets the "Service Engine
Soon Light".
* During deceleration
* During high rpm operation when air pressure is greater than the
setting for the internal relief valve.
WHEN does the A.I.R. system function?
Removing Smog pump, AIR: $8D 730 modifications
If you
have removed the AIR system, it is best to disable the function
completely by changing the minimum enable temperature to 151
deg. C.

Injector Flow
Rate
22.08 Lbs./Hr.
The stock GM TPI system injector rating
is based on 43.5 psi fuel pressure. To check fuel pressure,
the pump should be running without vacuum. This can be done by
jumping the pump to cause it to run without the engine running, or
with the engine running and disconnecting the vacuum line and
plugging the vacuum port on the manifold. If you change
injectors and/or pressure, you should change this value accordingly.
For instance, if you install Ford 24# SVO injectors, which are rated
24# at 40 psi, you should change this value to 24.00 if the pressure
is 40 psi. But if the rated pressure for a given injector is
changed, you must calculate the revised rating of the injector for
that given pressure. For example, say you simply increased the
pressure of a stock 22# injector (rated at 43.5 psi), to say 50 psi.
The formula is:

Spark Advance Initial (Distributor Setting):
As part of the spark
advance calculation rules, it is very important to set your physical
initial distributor setting to match this value. If they are
not the same, the actual amount of advance will be more or less and
the values in the SA tables will be meaningless.
